Haida Gwaii in 4k

Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands) if you haven’t heard of it is a chain of islands north of Vancouver island. I’ve been going here since I was a kid and more recently been trying to both film and photograph it. After attempting a number of years to shoot an adventure style documentary of the islands we’ve been dying to do something with our more cinematic footage.

It’s been a staple of my summers since I was a kid, so this is a bit of a love note to it.

This specifically was just a bunch of footage that we threw together shot both on a drone (specifically the DJI Phantom 3 Professional) and a 4K video camera, an Sony A7rii. Parks Canada graciously allowed us to shoot in the Gwaii Hanas under a number of conditions. One was that the drone had to always take off from water, and we were restricted as to where a number of the shots were taken. We maintained a distance from all sea and wildlife, the incredible video capabilities of the Drone with a slightly modified camera allowed us to do some generous cropping with 4K up-scaling. It was such a blast I will heavily be looking forward to next year.
